As teachers we want to have the highest expectations for ourselves and our learners. The classroom can be a great place to learn and works well for many learners. For some, though, it can be an ‘alien place’ especially for learners who may have social and emotional needs where traditional academic approaches may not seem meaningful. All learners are ‘meaning makers’ and can be successful if their learning is supported in ways that ‘make meaning meaningful’. In this very practical interactive workshop we will explore and share ideas and a range of activities aimed at creating an inclusive classroom environment for everyone with the emphasis on developing the aesthetic rather than the anaesthetic! Working through aspects of the creative arts will be a feature of this session and how the classroom can be a safe and secure space for learners supporting making meaning and engaging in a positive learning experience.
About Phil Dexter
Phil Dexter is currently the British Council UK Senior Consultant for English in Education Systems. Phil has also worked for Pilgrims as a teacher training and director of studies over many years. He currently leads training in the Pilgrims summer programme on the Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Learning Course.
In his ‘day job‘ Phil advises British Council teams globally on courses and resources for primary and secondary and currently works on approaches in creating and supporting more inclusive learning environments and classrooms. Phil’s most recent consultancy advice in inclusive education involves working with Governments in South Africa, Tanzania, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Spain, Germany and Baltic states. Phil has a Master’s Degree in English language studies from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and a Diploma in Special Educational Needs Phil was awarded an MBE in the 2017 Queens New year honours list for his work in special educational needs, equality, diversity and inclusion.
